1. REFRESHER ON THE INFORMATION IN THE SPECIFICATIONS
- Masses – Forces – Laws of motion.
 - Standards and regulations to be complied with.
 - Specific customer requirements.
 - Determination of maximum and average pressures and flow rates.
 - Choice of hydraulic fluid.
 
2. SIZING APPROACH
- Determination of maximum overall effort.
 - Tractive effort of the drive wheels.
 - Determination of the number of drive wheels.
 - Determination of the hydraulic motor(s)/pump(s).
 - Efficiency.
 - Exchange and cooling.
 - Transmission operating curve.
 
3. SELECTING THE CIRCUIT’S HYDRAULIC COMPONENTS
- Fast motors – Slow motors and hydraulic wheels.
 - Geared motors.
 - Motor control devices.
 - Hydraulic pumps for closed circuits: Direction of travel and displacement control devices – Control devices for pumps and motors (automotive, traction control).
 - Air-cooled heat exchangers.
 - Calculating the traction force of rolling stock.
 - Sum of efforts to be taken into account.
 - Sizing transmissions on different machines and installations.
 - Average efficiency.
 - Lifespan.
